About Us

The Blue Tomato Art Shop is committed to exhibiting work from local artists, providing quality art supplies and offering object repair and conservation services. It is the hope of proprietors Beth McCubbin and Heidi den Hartog that the Blue Tomato promotes an exchange of ideas, inspiration and information for artists and art enthusiasts.

As working artists, the shop also serves as an open studio for Beth and Heidi. An important aspect of the gallery, this space offers an opportunity for visitors to see works in progress in a variety of media including metalwork, sculpture and mixed media. The studio is also used for workshops and classes.

Beth McCubbin Artist Statement

Beth McCubbin

Beth McCubbin is a deeply dedicated environmentalist and social activist. She creates her art works in order to communicate, question society and bring about change.

Beth makes her art out of mixed materials, but mainly clay and metal. Most of the objects which are incorporated into Beth's work are found in the streets, alleys or in dumps. Her own photographic and drawn images are also often applied.

The materials and objects that Beth combines into her art pieces are as important to her as the final piece itself.

Heidi den Hartog Artist Statement

Heidi den Hartog

Heidi den Hartog's work explores both the possibilities and limitations of various materials, from rusted surfaces to polished enamel. Her mixed media pieces often combine found objects and reclaimed metal, bringing attention to the beauty of oddness, or what society generally rejects as worthless. She hopes that her work will inspire people to notice the small details in their surroundings, and examine their interaction with others and the world around them.
